  • Indonesia, Sumatra. Samosir. Ambarita stone chairs. A prisoner with a death penalty were led to these stones were the medicine man drove out evil spirits with his staff. After the body was beheaded the King drank some of the blood to receive magical powers, while the meat was mixed with other kinds of meat and eaten by the people. The bones were thrown in the lake, where swimming and fishing was forbidden for a week.

  • Indonesia, Sumatra. Samosir. Ambarita village. Unfortunately most of the Batak buildings these days are roofed with rusting corrugated iron, but they are still interesting to look at. The space under the house is used for domestic animals, the living area is large with no fixed walls, often inhabited by a dozen families.
